The Franciscan Path is an extraordinary religious and naturalistic itinerary that allows you to retrace the most significant places in the life of Saint Francis of Assisi. This spiritual journey passes through breathtaking landscapes between Tuscany and Umbria, offering a unique experience of connection with nature and faith.
The route begins from the Sanctuary of La Verna, where Saint Francis received the Sacred Stigmata, continues towards Gubbio, and ends in Assisi, the birthplace of the Saint. Between these points, the path winds through places rich in history and spirituality, including the suggestive Tenuta di Biscina, perfect for a regenerating break immersed in the beauty of nature.
Below, a guide to the unmissable places along the Franciscan Path:
According to tradition, here Saint Francis tamed the ferocious wolf with a sign of the cross, an event that occurred around 1222 and that is still remembered with great devotion today.
Located on a hill 603 meters above sea level, this church represents an example of medieval architecture, with remains of a historic parish church "outside the walls".
Also known as the Madonna delle Grazie, this chapel houses a small diary where pilgrims leave traces of their passage. It is located at kilometer 14.46 of the trail.
Along a dirt road, the hermitage reveals itself in all its beauty. This Benedictine monastery, dating back to the 13th century, preserves 15th-century frescoes inside and was carefully restored in the 1990s.
It is said that this small church hosted, in 1223, the first chapter of the Franciscan Order convened outside Assisi.
In the Chiascio valley, among the wooded slopes, you will find Biscina. The castle was worth the life of Guidubaldo da Montefeltro, redeemed from prison at the end of the fifteenth century with one hundred thousand ducats and two castles, including Biscina.
Immersed in woods and hills, the medieval castle offers spectacular views of the Chiascio valley. Built in the 11th century, its name seems to derive from a plant used for dyeing.
The city of Saint Francis, gently nestled at the foot of Mount Subasio, is the place where the Saint was born and spent his youth. Here you will find iconic monuments such as the Basilica of Saint Francis, declared a UNESCO heritage site.
